Yesterday I watched a series of local shows that show the true/real life of the unfortunate people in Singapore which we might not be able to imagine that it does exist in S'pore.

One of them is the encore telecast of the Quan Yifeng & Christopher Lee together with many volunteers who would go around helping those less fortunate people to clean their houses, help to improve their lives by finding jobs for them etc. It was the last episode, so they did a summary of all those they had helped before.

I'm pretty amazed at how some less fortunate lead a really terrible life. Be it mentally unsound, phyiscally disabled, having family member is mentally unsound, etc. There's always one of the family who will carry all the burden on himself.

There this family where all his children are mentally unsound, 2 of his daughters committed suicide, and his wife became refrained from outside. The father still manage to go on, as a garang guni, taking spoilt household products and repair it himself. Yifeng said that, although he suffered so much, but actually he's still an optimistic person, and he just want to express his bitterness to all those volunteers who helped that day.

The last family they visit for the last episode is a couple with disability. The husband was once a drug addict, but had turn over a new leaf. He's just married with a malay-chi wife who has some disability too. But both live their lives strongly and they manage to keep their house clean and neat! They both have a stable job, though earn pretty little, but they are happy enough to get a stable income. The husband said that he never thought of applying a govt subsidy, because
"ONCE I DO HAVE THAT IDEA, MY MENTALITY WOULD STRAY.." meaning he would not be independent anymore, and would always depend on the govt.

Quoted from the host, "Imagine how many poor but abled people applied for govt subsidies, yet they(disabled) are so strong and independent to depend on themselves to lead a normal life"..

Amazing words of him had inspired me to be more dependent on myself, and to be a better person in terms of physical and mentally.

Another local show I watched yesterday is the "Unexpected Access" hosted by Wong Lilin.
They were visiting the cleft clinic & surgery at the KK Hospital. They were to show some surgery and services the clinic provide to children with deformity or injuries.

And the first child they film is this poor little boy who suffered a 90% burn all over his body, including his face. It was said that a faulty air-conditioner fall down to his mattress while he was sleeping, and fire started burning the mattress and surrounding place, in a nick of anxiousness, he held on to an electrical wire that caused more burn onto him.

It was heart wrenching to see the little boy crying so badly when the nurses are removing the bandage, clean and put new bandages. There were blood, pus from his wound, etc. And his right arm had to be amputed as his hand was totally dead from the fire. My mum was watching the show with me, and she was exclaiming how poor thing the little boy was. He still so young, yet he had to go through all this pain 3 times a week so that he can recover from the burnt. And he had to live like this through the rest of his life. *sigh*

The show also showed an operation on another child, his skull had to be operate on to open up the skull and leave some spaces so that his brain can grow properly, I didn't really catch what the host said abt his illness, but it's something like his bone cells fuse together and doesn't grow normally. So the doctors had to operate to open up his skull to leave spaces for brain development. And the child had to go through such operations a few times till he's older.

After watching such shows, I did some in-depth thinking and reflections. I came to realise that actually I'm really fortunate to be able to lead a normal, healthy life as to now. Having to live in a healthy, normal family with normal siblings and normal school life. I ought to be contented with my own life, and treasure every moment. And stop procrastinating, and complaining about why I don't have this, why I can't have that.
